The story behind Captain Fawcett’s Moustache Wax

“Without supplies and short of ammunition. We are surrounded by hostile natives. However, whilst still sporting a stiff upper lip, I expect my men to fight to the inevitable bitter end.”
Now that the Captain Fawcett’s Moustache Wax website is live, I thought I’d let you know how this unusual project came about.
I met our client quite some time ago. He’s a colleague of a close friend of mine, organising motorbike tours in Africa, India and the United States but based in the UK. With long hair, full beard and a moustache that is permanently waxed to perfection, he has bucket loads of charisma and is one of those people who can regale you for hours with his tales.
One evening I was summoned to an urgent dinner meeting to discuss an intriguing mooey emergency. Our client explained that he’d always made his own moustache wax, with only the finest ingredients and no “nasties”. He’d recently been approached by a well-known niche retailer to start producing the wax on a larger scale and allowing them to sell it in their shop.
This got him thinking. Why not spend a little time in his kitchen, whip up a large batch, create some strong branding and packaging, and then sell it worldwide via a simple but memorable website? And so Captain Peabody Fawcett, ill-fated Edwardian explorer who always kept “a stiff upper lip, regardless,” was born.
For the next few months manage my website worked closely with Flipside Studio to make our client's dream a reality. Snatching time in between his numerous work trips abroad, violin lessons and magnificent moustache maintenance, we gradually tightened up the brief, producing visuals and Edwardian style copy as well as business cards and postcards.
The final stage involved setting up Captain Fawcett’s Twitter and Facebook pages, whilst deciding on a “tone of voice” for the Captain. The website was finally ready to launch, with the help of Kinetic Pulse, on 25 November 2010.
Orders have been coming in thick and fast for Captain Fawcett’s Moustache Wax and we’ve been assisting the Captain to update his Twitter and Facebook pages whilst he’s in India. This largely involves numerous SMS messages, emails and frantic phone calls from anywhere he can find a signal plus a lot of ad-libbing!
Plans are already underway to develop the website in 2011 – why not check it out and buy yourself or a moustachio’d loved one an Edwardian style treat this Christmas?
Captain Fawcett’s Moustache Wax retails at £6.50 per pot plus delivery.
